THE EASTER FESTIVAL
MANY CHURCH SERVICES Easter, as one of the great festivals of the Christian year, was celebrated with appropriate services in churches of all denominations in Auckland yesterday. Great numbers of Anglicans and Roman Catholics made their Easter Communion at services held in series from the early morning hours onward. All denominations made use of special music, and addresses upon the significance of the Resurrection were delivered from many pulpits. Archbishop Averill preached in the morning at St. Matthew's Church, the service being broadcast, and in the evening in St. Mary's Cathedral. The morning preacher at the cathedral was Archdeacon G. Mac Murray. At these and other churches special anthems were sung by the choirs. Solemn , Pontifical Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral by Bishop Liston. who also delivered an appropriate address. The preacher at evening devotions was the Rev. Philip Murphy, of the Franciscan Order, who is at present on a preaching tour of Now Zealand. As in past years, the Salvation Army celebrated the day in a special way by holding a prayer meeting at sunrise on the summit of Mount Eden. A recital of Easter niusio was given by the choir of Epiphany Church after the evening service, which was conducted by the Rev. Jasper Calder. In accordance with custom and by direction of the Diocesan Synod, all offerings in Anglican churches were treated as personal offerings to the respective vicars. SERVICES FOR SEAMEN VISITORS ENTERTAINED With many overseas ships in port during the Easter season special provision was made for the members of the crews by the Flying Angel Mission* to Seamen.
On Saturday football matches -were arranged for the men, followed by a social at the mission. There wero celebrations of Holy Communion in the Mariners' Chapel yesterday morning. In the afternoon a sight-seeing tour was enjoyed and on returning to the institute about 50 sailors sat down to the Easter tea as the guests of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. This was followed by a well-attended servico in the chapel, the various services were taken by the port chaplain, the Rev. H. K. Vickery. For to-day a programme of sports and a motor run have been arranged. Soccer matches will be played at Victoria Park this morning anil again this afternoon.
