PROBLEM FOR PLAYERS FIRST HOLE DIFFICULT PERFORMANCE OF P. SMITH The first hole presented a problem for a number of players, no f®p' er nine tee-shots in the first half-hour or play finding the out-of-bounds fence. Young took some time to settle down, as he required 41 for the first nine, but he played steadily coming home, threes at the 14th and loth holes enabling him to return a 78. In. spite of a seven at the sth in the afternoon he was out in 37 and coming in he had a 6 at the 12th, but finished with three good fours. Brinsden commenced by sliising his first shot over the fence and a 6 resulted. Although he slipped strokes on the greens on the last nine he missed few opportunities in his second round / of 75. George had a great opportunity to lead the field in the morning, as h© was level fours at the turn, but was unable to better fives over the last four holes. Sixes at the sth and 6th holes in the afternoon were the only serious mistakes in his round of 77 and his aggregate was one behind the leaders. Coltman and Morpeth were responsible for particularly steady golf all day and each was deserving of bettor figures judging from their long games. Bartleet had the best round of the morning, his second half of 38 resulting from six fours to finish. Although playing steadily in the next round his score ■was three strokes more.

The best performance of the day was that of P. Smith, the youngest competitor in the field. After a morning round of 84 it appeared that he would fail to qualify, but he played a great fighting second round of 73 to gain a place easily. His score of 34 for the , i first nine was the best of the day, and, coming in, hooked irons at the Wrecker and Temptation cost him strokes. Otherwise he played splendid golf. Thomson, of Whangarei, was the only player from outside the metropolitan clubs to qualify and he played steadily throughout. His second round of 77 resulted from good golf. Four young players, Browne, Sted, man, Earle and Bell, are all in the first sixteen, this being Bell's first appearance in championship golf. His morning round of 82 included a number of sixes and in the afternoon he improved slightly. Earle carded an 8 at the second and apart from a 7 at the Wrecker he played soundly. Browne missed few opportunities on the greens for his rounds of 80, while Stedman gained a place by playing better in the afternoon.
