GISBORNE AERODROME
LOCAL BODY EXPENDITURE EXPEDITING . LEGISLATION [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] GISBORXE. Saturday An undertaking that on his return to Wellington he would take the portunity of bringing under the notice of the responsible Minister the need for urgency with legislative action to permit further expenditure of local body funds on the Darton Field aerodrome was given by Mr D. W. Coleman, M.P., at a meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. Mr. Coleman presided over the meeting in his capacity as Mayor. Mr. N. H. Bull said there was engaged on runways reconstruction on the existing field a machine of great value in such work If the additional work contemplated in a larger scheme of improvements for Darton Field, could be put in hand within a reasonable time this machine might be retained and a considerable saving made in the additional work.
The Mayor gave an assurance that he had done his utmost to secure progress in connection with legislation authorising the outlay of local bodies funds on this project and would seek the earliest opportunity of again going into the matter with the Minister.
In all 70 men are engaged on day rates at the aerodrome under the supervision of the Public Works Department. A machine designed by a Canterbury inventor for use in large scale operations of this kind was employed to do the major portion of the levelling. The operation of this machine has been noted with keen interest by departmental engineers and others associated with the work.
