USEFUL ACCESSORIES TO THE MODERN HOME UTILITY AND CONSERVATION OF SPACE Already the major aspects of building construction have been dealt with fully and authoritatively, but a suggestion or two with regard to the finishing touches to essential outside appliances will be recognised by appreciative house owners. * How many otherwise attractive homes do we see in this fair city of ours the complete appearance of which is absolutely spoiled by an untidy mess of wires stretching in all directions across the back garden? A clothes line is as much an integral part of a home as is a front door and an aerial is essential to the effective use of the radio, but why have sagging clothes lines extending in various directions, often attached to trees and supported in the centre by a tea-tree prop, and generally an aerial line running in an opposite direction, not to mention, of course, such wires as are attached to the property of the Power Board and Post and Telegraph Department? mm Can it be said that such a picture as described is either attractive, convenient or efficient? And yet the alternative is surprisingly simple and the cost trifling. , A revolving clothes line is designed to provide the utmost service to the laundry department and at the same time to eliminate anything offensive to Otherwise artistic surroundings. This device occupies the minimum of room, the total diameter being only 18ft.; this in many cases is a most important consideration, as quite a number of building sections will not permit of 100 ft. of clothes line extended in one direction after allowing room for the kitchen garden, trees, etc. The revolving clothes line provides for 200 ft. of line and its design is such that it is not necessary to carry a heavy clothes basket up and down a long line, the extended arms being simply turned toward the user, thus there is no necessity to walk across a damp lawn or garden to hang the clothes out; furthermore, the clothes dry much more readily as the line slowly revolves with the wind. It cannot be claimed long line of wet clothing is a pleasing spectacle at any time; however:, the device under review ensures a minimum of display and yet exposes the clothing to maximum drying power of wind and sun. By throwing a canvas over the top, the revolving clothes line is readily converted into a tent, and, of course, the line is anchored when not in use. The fact that practically all leading architects recommend the revolving clothes line must be recognised as an added endorsement of a highly practical household adjunct —Article and illustration contributed by Builders' Supplies Ltd., Anzac Avenue, Auckland.
