NORTH AUCKLAND TITLES [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI. Friday The annual tournament of the North Auckland Lawn Tennis Association which commenced this morning on the Whangarei Lawn Tennis Club's grass courts, has attracted record entries. In addition to players from all over North Auckland, a number of competitors are present from Auckland. Heavy showers during the night made the courts tricky during the morning, but the weather improved during the day, and this afternoon the court# were in good condition, and »ome interesting matches took place.
Miss B. Knight, of Auckland, is making her firßt appearance at this tournament and she should have little difficulty in winning the ladies' singles title. Greater interest should centre around the men's title, which is being defended by O. Litherland. of Auckland. His opponents include Rodney Smith, formerly of Warkworth and a previous holder of the title. Following are to-day's results: Men's Doubles Championship. First round: L. T. Pickmere and D. Wilson beat Sueater and T. C'olthart. 6—o. G—3; J. Burch and T. O'Carroll beat E. Child and Miller. 6—2, 4 —6, 6—l; H. Potter and K. Potter beat J. Birchall and T. Wells. 6—2. 6—o; V. R. Johns and O. Litherland beat M. Bnigcnt and Tiemey. t!—o, 6—l; C. G. Bowden and V. Potter beat R. S. Finch and C. Waymouth, 6—l. 6—5.
Ladies' Doubles.—First round: Misses Launder and Lee beat Miss D. A. Bird and Miss Booth. G—s, G—i. Ladies' Singles.—First round: Miss P. Cooke bent Miss Brindle, G—o, 6—3: Mies B. Knight beat Miss Fox. 6—2, 6—l: Miss Saul beat Miss Andrewes. 6—l, 6—3. Men's Singlos.—First round: R. Smith beat T. Colthart, 6—l, G—3; K. Potter beat S. C. Thome. 6—3. 6—l. Combined Doubles.—First round: R. Smith and Mrs. Christensen beat S. C. Thorne and Miss Gabolinsky, 6—o, 6—l; H. Potter and Miss Clark beat Neale and Miss Ayton, 6—l, 6—2; R. S. TAUPIRI TOURNAMENT [from our own correspondent] TAUPIRI, Friday A successful tournament was held by the Taupiri Lawn Tennis Club for lady players. The senior championship cup was won by Mrs. N. Jackways.
