CONTESTS AT THAMES NEARLY 200 MEN TO COMPETE [by telegraph—own correspondent] THAMES. Wednesday Extraordinarily heavy entries have been received for the fire brigades' demonstration to be held at Thames on Saturday. The entries total 150 for seven events, about 190 men participating. The following places will each send one team: —Matamata, Raetihi, Rotorua, Tauranga and Whangarei. Two teams will come from Birkenhead, Dargaville, Devonport, Mount Wellington, Ngaruawahia, Opotiki, Papatoetoe, Pukekohe, Taumarunui, Te Awamutu, To Kuiti, Waiuku and Whakatane, while three teahis have been entered from Northcote, Otorohanga,. Te Aroha, Waihi and Thames. Owing to the large number af entries the demonstration, although it will start at eight o'clock in tho morning, will not finish until six o'clock in the evening. Even then the events will take place at four-minute intervals. The brigades will be accorded a civic welcome by the Mayor of Thames on Friday evening, after which the Auckland District Fire Brigades' Association will hold its annual conference, the business of which is stated to be lengthy. On Saturday evening at a? social function the presentation of prizes will take place. On Sunday morning a church parade will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, and in the afternoon a motor trip to the coast has been arranged.
