A SACRED DAY
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES OBSERVANCE IN CHURCHES PROCESSION OF WITNESS Good Friday, the most solemn and the most widely recognised of all the sacred days in the Christian calendar, will be observed at special services m many of "the city and suburban churches to-morrow. . , _ ~ At St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, Cnnon W. Fancourt will preach at a service at 10 a.m., while Archbishop Averill will conduct the three hours devotions from noon until 3 p.m. In the evening the cathedral choir wi render Stainer's '(Crucifixion. The principal Roman Catholic services will be those in St. atr 3 Cathedral, commencing with the Mas 3 of the Pre-Sanctified at 10 a.m. The Stations of the Cross will be observed at 3 p.m. and there will also be evening devotions, the preacher being tho Rev. Phillip Murphy. United devotions have been arranged in some of the other churches. The main service of this nature will e that at the Pitt Street Methodist Church at 10.30 a.m., the churches cooperating being the Baptist Tabernacle, Beresford Street Congregational, St. James' Presbyterian and Pitt Street. The Rev. Francis J. Handy will conduct the service. The Salvation Army has arranged united services to be held in the Congress Hall, Grey's Avenue, at 10.30 a.m., and 3 and 7 p.m. An Easter morning sunrise prayer meeting will bo held on the summit of Mount Eden at 7 o'clock.
The half-yearly Auckland Christian Convention will be held in Scots Hall, Upper Symonds Street, from tomorrow until Monday. Proceedings will open with a prayer meeting at 11 o'clock to-morrow morning. Speakers at the afternoon session will be Messrs. 11. A. Laidlaw and T. M. Stewart, while the evening addresses will be delivered bv Messrs. J. Spott is woods and W. R. Wilson. The United Christian Convention will be held at Ngaruawahia over the same period. As in previous years, a procession of witness, arranged by the New Zealand Church Union, will leave from the corner of Little Queen Street and Quay Street at 6.30 this evening, moving by way of Queen Street and Wellesley Street to St. Paul's Church. Two brief services will be held on tho way, the first in Quay Street and the other at the corner of Victoria Street West and Queen Street. After arrival at St. Paul's Church a service will be conducted bv Archbishop Averill. A passion play, "The Way of the Cross," will be presented in All Saints' Parish Hall to-morrow evening in place of the usual Good Friday evening service.
