SUCCESSFUL YEAR
ONE TREE HILL BOROUGH PRESENTATION OF ACCOUNTS " The accounts speak for themselves," said the Mayor, Sir. I. J. Goldstine, at a. meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last night, when a statement of the financial position of the borough as at March 31, 1936, was presented by the town clerk, Mr. A, Leese. " There is no doubt,"' he added, " ttfat the year has been particularly successful from the borough's point of view." . The statement showed receipts totalling £38,682, compared with £40,648 in the previous year. Payments amounted to £38,955, against £39,647. The general account, which covered the major operations of the council, showed receipts totalling £19,477 and payments £19,282, leaving a credit balance of £195, compared with a credit of £972 at the.beginning of the year. According to the statement the reduction was entirely due to expenditure on additional permanent works not provided for in the estimates. Had the extra works not been prosecuted, the credit balance would have shown a substantial increase. Current municipal rates paid amounted to £19,762, or 91.4 per cent of the net levy, compared with 88.8 per cent and 87.1 per cent in 1935 and 1934 respectively. The collection of arrears had also been satisfactorily maintained, 67 per cent of the net collectable arrears having been paid during the year, compared with 69 per cent in the previous year. The rates outstanding totalled £3538, a reduction of £340 from the previous year's figure. Rates written off totalled £4lO. . The net cash cirbdit of the combined revenue accounts stood at £BO3B, the statement added. That showed a reduction of £273 on the 1935 figure, £B3ll. In view of the reduction of £1405 in the total municipal rates levied for tho year, and of the record amount of per manent work undertaken, the result of the year's working was gratifying. In a supplementary report, the town clerk stated that the actual expenditure on streets and footpaths, including stormwater drainage, totalled £16,773. •In moving the adoption of the statements, the Mayor said the audit inspector had expressed appreciation at the way the accounts were presented and had said that the borough was in j a particularly sound position. The motion was carried.;
