CRICKET UMPIRE
SUCCESS OF MR. D. L. RYAN Since ho took up umpiring four years ago Mr. D. L. Ryan, of Auckland, has met with remarkable success. Starting his first representative fixture in the junior match for the Brabin Shield between Auckland and Wellington in the 1932-33 season, Mr. H.van has been umpiring in Plunket Shield matches each year since. Three of the four test matches against the M.C.C. team this season fell to him. It is well known that the visiting English players held a high, opinion of Mr. Ryan, some of the members stating that he compared very favourably with the best umpires in England.
The following representative matches have been controlled by Mr. ]?yan during his umpiring career:—l 933: lira bin Cup. 1933-34: Otago v. Auckland, Canterbury v. Auckland, Uawke's Bay v. Auckland, Town v. Country. 1934-35: Wellington v. Auckland, Town v. Country. 1935-36: Otago v. Auckland, Canterbury v. Auckland, Wellington v. Auckland, M.C.C. v. Auckland, M.C.C. v. New Zealand (second test), M.C.C. v. New Zealand (third test), M.C.C. v. New Zealand .(fourth test).
