DRINKING PARTIES
BEER SUPPLIED TO MAORIS MAN FINED AT THAMES [by telegraph OWN correspondent] THAMES, Tuesday "These parties will have to cease, otherwise the fines will be more severe," said Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, when fining James Nicholas £4 and costs for aiding and abetting some person unknown in the unlawful supply of liquor to Maoris. Sergeant Daly, in prosecuting, said drinking parties among natives at Puriri had been common and had been going on frequently at different places as well as at the one visited by the police. When the police car arrived on the night of March 7 at a section near the Puriri railway station the gates were thrown open and the car was waved on, the gatekeeper evidently thinking it was occupied b}' friends. There was a general scatter when the police were recognised. A three-gallon jar of beer was found in defendant's car, but the defendant denied any knowledge of it.
