MAORI ARTS SCHOOL
NEEDS OF WELLINGTON PROPOSAL BY SIR A. NGATA The formation of a Wellington Maori Arts School has been suggested by Sir Apirana Ngata, who is at present m Wellington directing some special carving for the Sir Maui Pomare Memorial House at Waitara. At such a school, he stated, young Maoris from the South Island and from the southern portions of the North Island could be trained in the same way as at Rotorua. He suggested that the shed in Sydney Street, where the work is being done, would serve the purpose admirably. Another alternative would be to house the school at the new Dominion Museum on Mount Cook. Rotorua was a long way from the homes of many of the southern Maoris, but if there was a branch in Wellington most of them would be within a few hours of their homes.
