REVIEW OF FINANCES NATIVE LAND RATING [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE KUITI. Tuesday The financial position of the Waitomo County Council was outlined by the clerk, Mr. J. W. O'Brien, at a meeting of the council yesterday. Receipts during the year ended March 31 were £.'38,973, compared with £37,121 in the previous year, an increase of £1852. Expenditure was £34,496, compared with £31,884, an increase of £2612. The surplus over the year's working was £4477, compared with £5237. Advice was received that the Minister of Public Works did not consider the erection of two bridges on the Mangotoa Road was advisable until the road was an all-weather route. Advice was received from the Education Board that neither the Public Works Department nor the Main Hiyuways Board was prepared to contribute to the cost of a footpath between the Piopio township and school. The engineer was instructed to report on the cost. The chairman, Mr. W. A. Leo, reported on an interview with the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, on native rating. He said ho felt confident that something would be done to place native rating in a more equitable position.
