FIFTY YEARS AGO
GOLD AT THE WADE People in all parts of the country had visions of gold discoveries in their districts half a century ago. It ■ wa« mainly in the country between the Thames goldfields and the King Country that hopes were high, however, and it is somewhat surprising to find the following paragraph in the Xf.w Zealand Herald of AJarc-h 19, 1886:- " For a considerable time past, th® people of the Wade (now Silverdale) district have been possessed of the kK® that sooner or later a paying goldfieW will be found there.. On several occasions stone containing gold has been discovered and a few days ago J""Henry Lloyd of that district left wit# ns several samples of stone and reel clayey casing said to Contain gold, y® are assured by Mr. Lloyd that sample* of the same class of stuff yielded a sensible quantity of both gold and sdver. One of these tests gave at the rate Oh gold 13dwt. and silver 4oz. 5 dvrt. w the ton."
