GOLD DISCOVERY
GOOD YIELD REPORTED AREA FAMOUS IN EARLY DAYS [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, March 7 An official report received by the Minister of Mines, Mr. Vincent, states that a gold find has been made at Gulgong. The senior geological surveyor, Mr. George J. Jones, in & report to the Minister, says that the site of the new find is on private property three and a-half miles south of Gulgong township, just below the junction of the Magpie and Springfield "leads," which were such prolific producers in the early days of Gulgong. The discovery was made last month by Messrs. C. Bennett, and party, and within 10 days 560z. of gold was recovered. The gold was fairly coarse. The largest nugget so far found weighed about 4oz. The depth of sinking ranged from 14ft. to 20ft. and the wash dirt was about nine inches thick.
The present- discovery, added the report, might be in the nature of a small pocket, but, on the other hand, the lead might prove profitable for a distance of several chains downstream. As the land traversed by the lead had already been secured under "authority to enter," there was no justification for any "rush" to the locality.
