SPEEDWAY RACING
CLOSE OF THE SEASON SPECIAL EVENTS ARRANGED A special programme of outstanding promise has been arranged for the final meeting of the season at Western Springs Speedway to-night. In addition to a team of expert broadBiders in match races and other events, there will be spectacular stunts by Putt Mossman, and midget-car racing. Outstanding among the feats to be performed by the American, Mossman, is his ''rocket ride," in which hp rides a heavy motor-cycle at speed down a plank runway, surges over a rise and leaps with , the machine into the air, to land in a blazing tank. The performance is one which demands the greatest skill and courage. Mossman will also undertake a speoial blindfold ride. Unusual ability as a midget-car driver was displayed by Dessie Grant, a skilful American girl, at meetings in the south, and she will be at the wheel of a particularly fast model tonight. She defeated the Wellington champion at Palmerston North, and it is expected that she will make a good i showing to-night against Mossman and i two Auckland experts, A. Mattson and ! George Smith. Particular care has been I taken in preparing the tiny cars, which j are capable of high speeds on the cinders. The broadsiding events will include | a test match, the Colonies versus the j United States. The Colonies will be ! represented by Van Praag, a brilliant j rider \vho has broken records at alj most every appearance, A. Mattson. f Auckland's leading broadsider, C. GoldJ berg, and B. Bray. The American ijeam has not yet been chosen, but the riders ! eligible * include Arena, McKinney, Trugillo, Lisman, Mossman i and Cullum. The' strongest possible team will be selected, and a series of events will be held. Previous races in which the American riders have been matched agaipst the Australian and New Zealand representatives, have resulted in contests of more than usual interest. Finishes are likely to be close to-night, when each rider will be on his mettle in the final races of the season.
