EXPORT OF MEAT

HEAVY SHIPMENTS MADE KILLINGS REMAIN LIGHTER Particularly heavy shipments of meat were made in the first fortnight in February, figures for every class of meat during'that period being greater than for the whole of January. This has resulted in shipments of chilled beef, mutton, lamb and pork. for. the season to February 15 being greater than in the corresponding period last • season. Killings of mutton and lamb, however, show a substantial decline. Shipments for the period October 1 to February 15 compare as follows: —

CENTRAL OTAGO FRUIT SMALLER EXPORT CROP ABSENCE OF BROWN ROT [by telechaph OWN correspondent] DUNE DIN, Friday Available fruit crops in the Central Otago district will be smaller for export purposes this year than was the case last season. An officer of the Department of Agriculture who visited the district a week ago said this morning that growers were commencing export packing next week, the first shipment to England having to be sent to Wellington to be loaded on the Rangitiki, which leaves the following week. As there were lighter crops of Jonathans, Cleopatras and Cox's this season this would mainly account for the decrease in export stocks. Delicious apples were being retarded by dry weather, but this should not have a noticeable effect on the export total, as there was always a considerable portion of the Delicious crop too big for sending overseas. The stone fruit season, he said, was nearing a finish, although plums were still coming on. Late varieties .of peaches were decreasing in quantity. Bon Chretien pears were still in plentiful supply and ruling prices were very low. One pleasing feature of the fruit season this year was the • absence of brown rot in stone fruits. AMERICAN CATTLE SHIPMENT TO AUSTRALIA (Received February 28. 9.25 p.m.) SYDNEY.' SERVICE WITH MELBOURNE I • REQUEST FOR EXTENSION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCABGILL, Friday The question of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce urging the extension of the Bluff-Meibourne passenger service was raised by Mr. A. le H. Hoyles at yesterday's meeting of the executive. There was still a threeweekly cargo service, he said, but he suggested that the chamber co-operate with the Southland League should that body decide to interest itself in the matter. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Reed, expressed the opinion that the extension was most desirable. The service during the present season had been much improved. The matter was left in the hands of the shipping committee. The Bluff Harbour Board also discussed the subject, several members speaking in favour of an extension. Mr. W. A. Ott, chairman of thfi board, said since the vessel started running in November she had been well patronised, and hundreds of Australians and tourists from further afield had travelled on the ship. The Marama was scheduled to arrive at Bluff on her last trip on March 15, but he felt that some effort should be made to extend the sailings until the end of April at least. The service had been very well run and the province would gain if the ship's time-table was extended. The board decided to ask the Southland League to take action.
