EXTRA IGNITION CONTROL
A SIMPLE ALTERATION On cars fitted only with an automatic ignition advance mechanism' it is usually possible for the keen owner to rig up a hand control in addition giving an increased range of advance and retard which can give improved performance and fuel consumption, provided proper use is made of the control.
The distributor is usually secured by a split clamp, which is held in position by a bolt passing through it. If the bolt hole in the clamp is slotted as
shown in tho accompanying sketch and an arm attached to carry a Bowden wire, a useful range of advance and retard will be obtained. A bracket will be required near the distributor to carry the adjustable stop for the end of the Bowden wire, and tho bolt passing through tho slot should be provided with a flat doublespring washer, to hold the plate steady under all conditions. A spring will also bo needed on the Bowden wire itself to carry the distributor back to tho retarded position when tho lever is released. If there is not room on tho clamp to cut the slot, a replacement suitably slotted can usually be obtained from a garage.
