DAIRY CATTLE

QUALITY OF ENTRIES

JERSEY CLASSES STRONG . KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST Customary strong interest was displayed in the judging of the dairy cattle classes, largo crowds lining the rings throughout the day. Favoured by exceptional pasture growth for the time of the year, farmers brought out their exhibits in excellent condition, and the stock were a fine example of the best of the cattle of the Dominion's leading dairy province. All the judges were enthusiastic over the new rings, which they regarded as making for the efficiency of their task and the easy handling of the exhibits. Judges' Praise "In my opinion the Friesians were the finest collection I have seen in any show," said Mr. J. H. P. Liggins, of Tokoinaru. "There was good competition in every class, and it was always hard to select the prize-winners. The champion bull was of a pleasing type, in the pink of condition and very well handled, and the champion cow was the finest I have ever had in the show ring." The total number of individual entries was just short of 100, and the prizes were very well distributed. "The Jerseys were an impressive lot of cattle taken right through," said Mr. R. C. Leach, of Woodville, the judge. "Three classes were very strong, these being the mature cows, the two-year-old heifers and the wcaner bulls. Some of the local sections were inclined to be weak. Both champion animals were outstanding, the cow maintaining her splendid reputation in spite of hqr age." Good Quality Ayrshires The Ayrshires, though comprising a smaller entry than usual, were of very good quality, stated the judge, Mr. C. Watt, of Cambridge. The group shown by Mr. 0. Bailey, of Huntly, was again outstanding, his champion bull and cow being regarded as likely to perform well in any competition.

Small classes also characterised the milking Shorthorn group, which, in the opinion of Mr. E. Wall, of Hastings, was brought out in first-class condition.
