NATIONAL MEETING CONTESTS AT DUNEDIN MILE RACE TO BOOT , . [BY TELEGRAFH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Friday Running a well-judged race, V. G. Boot, the young Canterbury athlete who registered sensational times as a schoolboy, led home a field' of seven in the one mile event at the New Zealand amateur athletic championships, which were commenced this afternoon in excellent weather. This was the most important event of the afternoon, most of the other races being heats. The track was in good order, but ' was on the heavy side. A light easterly breeze had little effect on the competitors, and the running was of a very high standard. Judging by the performances registered in some of the heats, especially in the 100 yds. and the 220 yds. hurdles, the finals to-morrow should provide stirring contests. One of the features of to-day's events was the fine showing made by B. L. Tapley, of Otago, in the second heat of the 100 yds., which he won by a yard in 10s, beating both G. Quinn, Hawke's Bay, who was second, and J. B. McFarlane, Canterbury, who won the championship last year. Boot's win in the mile was not altogether a surprise, but it was anticipated that A. R. Wilson, of Wellington, and C. H. Matthews, the brilliant Canterbury runner, might fight out the finish. At the end of the first lap Matthews appeared to be moving extremely well, but after that he faded out. Over the last half-mile there was no one in the picture but Wilson, W. A. C. Pullar and Boot. In a sprint for the tape, however, Boot displayed great dash and won with 10yds. to spare, Pullar finishing a similar distance behind Wilson. I. D. Craig, of Otago, was fourth. Discus Throw There were five competitors in the discus throwing championship, which was won by A. A. Cameron, Otago, his distance, 139 ft. 3£in., being ljin. better than the best New Zealand performance put up by P. Munro in 1930. The record is 144 ft. 6Jin., established by an American, H. P. Rothert, in 1931. J. D. Morgan, West Coast, North' Island, gained second with" 129 ft.. 10in., and A. D. Adlum, Wellington, was third. Cameron also had a fairly comfortable win in the broad jump. 'His distance was 22ft. 6iin. Once again I. Driscoll, of Hawke's Bay, had no difficulty in winning the three miles walk. He led all the way and won by 180 yds. His time was 22m 27 3-os. The only other championship decided to-day was the pole vault, for which there were seven competitors. , This event was won by M. V. Blake, of Canterbury, J. H. Opie, 'Canterbury,» being second. Both Blake and Opiel vaulted lift. 3in., and in the jump-off a Opie failed completely. ' , * Results of Events Following are the results:— 120 Yds. Hurdles. —First heat: F.
