BELAY BACES DECIDED PARNELL CLUB'S CARNIVAL RECORD ATTEMPT ABANDONED Tho Parnell Swimming Club conducted its first, carnival of the season at the Tepid Baths last evening before a fair attendance. The feature of the evening was the 500 yds flying squadron inter-club, relay championship of Auckland for the Tui Memorial Cup, this being comfortably won by the Mount Eden Club, with North Shore second. During the evening- 'Dr. J. A. Watson, president of the Parnell Club, in making the presentation of a pennant _ to the successful Mount Eden relay team in recognition. of the good work and the splendid record it had accomplished during tho season, briefly mentioned the club's efforts and wished it continued success. At the conclusion of the inter-house relay contest for the Jaffe Cup Mr. M. Jaffe, donor of the trophy presented it to the captain of the Auckland Star team, which scored a fine victory after a splendid tussle with the Milne and Choyce representatives. It was announced, during the evening that an illness sustained, by Miss V. Colt-> hurst, Auckland lady sprint champion, had resulted in the abandonment of her record attempt on the New Zealand 60yds ladies' record. » , , The Australian system of handicapping* which was recently adopted by the Auckland Centre, was enforced for the first occasion at an Auckland carnival. Time, 455. AUSTRALIANS WANTED WAITEMATA CLUB'S PROPOSAL The Waitemata Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club's proposal to invite to Auckland tho Australian lady champions. Misses Pat Norton, of New South Wales, and Evelyn de Lacy, of West Australia, was approved yesterday by the Auckland. Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association The club stated that the intention was for Misses Norton and de Lacy to swim at carnivals in Auckland, Rotorua and other towns, and that, if either was not available, the Victorian. champion, A. Craw-« ford, would be invited in their place. The three swimmers named all have imposing records. Regarded as the most skilful girl swimmer produced in Australia. Miss i Norton, whose age is 16 years,, learnt the art in Auckland, leaving here for Sydney with her parentj at the age of. 10. 11l the 1932-33 season, when 13 years of age, she attracted notice by winning the junior and intermediate girls' championships of New South Wales, and she has since scored many senior successes. Miss de Lacy, who is 19 years of age, has risen to being a notable swimmer onlv this-season. Crawford is 100 yds, 220 yds and 440 yds champion of Victoria. Permission was granted the !North Shore Club to send a team to compete at Hamilton to-morrow - evening. ■ The club's representative advised that the New Zealand Council had approved the payment of expenses. AT SHEIJLY BEACH- ; A very successful carnival was held by the Marist Brothers' Vermont Street school at the Shelly Beach Baths yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of pupils, parents and friends of the school. A lengthy programme, in which 170 individual competitors took Part, was decided. The school was divided into two sections, east and west, the west winning by 193 points to lio.
