HAMILTON TOWN HILL
SCHEME FOR REMOVAL WORK IN THREE STAGES [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday An alternative scheme for the removal of Garden Place hill in three stages was submitted to the Hamilton Borough Council last night by the engineer, Mr. R. Worley. It was estimated by Mr. Worley that the construction costs of the first stage would not exceed £20,000. Mr. Worley said the first stage would involve the removal of the hill from Victoria Street back to about the centre line of Alexandra Street extended. It would also be advisable to include in this phase the levelling of a portion of the area lying between the southern boundary of the Winter Show buildings and Garden Place. It would be necessary to construct an access from Anglesea Street to serve the properties on the remaining portion of the hill. 1 By the completion of this stage the full area of the square back to Alexandra Street would be made available and would enable Alexandra Street to bo constructed from Garden Place to Ward Street, continued Mr. Worley. When the available business sites .provided by. this phase of the scheme had been taken up the second stage could lie put in hand. Mr. Worley recommended that the council should set up a valuation committee to estimate the likelv values of the properties to be acquired and the probable return from the sale of the levelled area. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, it was decided to adopt the engineer's suggestion anc, appoint a valuation committee. After discussion on the matter the following committee was appointed, with authority to confer with the borough valuer: — The deputy-mayor, Mr. H. D. Caro, and "Messrs. H. M. Hammond, W. W. Dillicar and «T. E. Tidd.
