FIFTY YEARS AGO
NEW RAILWAY PROPOSAL TAURANGA TO ROTORUA The construction of a railway line from Tauranga to Kotorua apparently was contemplated half a century ago. The following item dealing with the matter appeared in the Nkw Zealand Hkrai.d of February 26, 1886: ''A meeting of the Tauranga Local Railway Company was held yesterday to wind up the present company and transfer its contract and concessions in hand to a new London company, which, on the transfer being completed, is ready to commence the construction of tjie line from Tauranga to Rotorua. ihe draft agreement provides that the English company shall deposit £20,000 wit the Government, £22,000 of ,which i to be held by them until operations a proceeded with."
