FAMOUS OPERA
"THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD" The final performance of "The Pirates of Penzance" and "Trial b.v Jury" will be given in His Majesty's Theatre this afternoon, when students will be . admitted at half-price. "Tho Yeomen of the Guard" will commence to-night. This famous romantic opera will be presented until Saturday, and a matinee will be given on that day. One of the most popular of the Savoy operas, it is more serious in theme than tho others. It was first conceived by Gilbert when he was standing one day on Uxbridge railway station, and ho noted a picture of a Beefeater, as the Tower Guardsmen are called, in an advertisement. The idea occurred to him of the suitability of an opera concerning the Tower of London. So enthralled was he with the idea that he set about preparing the libretto of a new opera at once, and within threo weeks had finished the opera. Ho wished to call it "The Beefeaters," but Sir Arthur Sullivan advised the more dignified title of "Tho Yeomen of tho Guard." Contrary to doubts about its reception after tho gay nonsense of operas such as "H.M.S. Pinafore," "Tho Yeomen of tho Guard" proved one of their greatest successes. Booking arrangements are advertised.
