NEW TOLL BRIDGE
♦ BRISBANE RIVER SPANNED DIVERSE TASKS OF PROMOTER [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY. Feb. 17 The Indooroopilly toll bridge—the first toll bridge to span the Brisbane River —was officially opened by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, yesterday. The structure has the longest span of any suspension bridgo in the Commonwealth, and the second longest of any type in Australia. It cost £85,000, with an additional £15,000 for resumptions. The Governor, in praising Mr. Walter Taylor, the promoter of the bridgo project, said it was unique in Australia that one man should hold the positions of promoter of the scheme, director of the company, engineer-contractor for the bridgo, and secretary of the company. Mr. Taylor explained that he had raised 80 per cent of the capital, including £15,000 in Melbourne. Tho bridge is 600 ft. in length, and is suspended on cables anchored in massive pylons on either bank of the river.
