FRESHENING WINDS rain becoming general The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by - • the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —Pressure has remained high to the east of Zealand, but a depression is now advancing across the • - Tasman Sea toward the North Island. The forecast is for variablo winds, mainly between north-east and southeast, light to moderate at first but freshening about and north of Cook' Strait and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas in New Zealand waters smooth to moderate, but rising north of the East Cape and a considerable easterly swell on all -the east coast. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong northeasterly winds, later backing to southerly with rough seas in the northern portion, moderate, to fresh easterly to south-easterly winds and moderate seas in the southern portion. The weather is likely to be cloudy, warm and humid with scattered rain, later f V rain becoming more general and some heavy falls likely with thunder in places. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDER The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Winds light and variable at first, but easterlies prevailing and freshening later, changing to southerly. The weather is likely to be warm, cloudy to overcast with rain and some heavy falls and thunder in places. Seas moderate, but becoming rough on the east coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —The weather was overcast and threatening yesterday and continuous light rain was experienced during the afternoon. The wind was light and it varied between east and south. The conditions were humid, the temperature at 4 p.m. being 73 degrees. Wellington.—A beautifully fine and hot summer day with a light northerly wind was experienced yesterday. The minimum temperature on Sunday night was 57 degrees. The maximum yesterday was 79 degrees. Christchurch. —The weather was fine and sunny in Christchurch yesterday. The maximum temperature was 77 degrees. The barometer was falling slowly and registered 29.98 in. at 5 o'clock. Dunedin. —Fine weather with sunshine and passing cloud prevailed yesterday. A south-westerly breeze was blowing and the maximum temperature was 69 degrees. The barometer was steady at 30.05 in.
