TURF IN AUSTRALIA

G. PRICE'S GOOD DAY SUCCESSES AT CAULFIELD FINE FORM OF GOLD ROD [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, Feb. 17 Saturday last was a red-letter day for the ex-New Zealander George Price, as he won four races, tlireo at Caulfield and one at Canterbury Park, Sydney, and all with Now Zealand-bred horses. M. McCartcn rode Gold Rod, who is owned by another ex-New Zealander, Mr. E. J. Watt. The Dominion interest did not end there, as Cuddle also won, and she was ridden by the irresistible Keith Voitro. Ilium broke the sequence, for ho races in the interests of the Newcastle owner, Mr. H. T. Lucerne, with D. Munro in the saddle. Tho S3'dney winner, Loud Applause, is tho property of Mr. Ned Moss, who is well-known to many across tho Tasman. The colt was riddon by J. Britt. whose brother, E. Britt, is riding with success in India. It was Britt's first winning ride. Gold Pod scored without an effort in the Federal Stakes at Caulfield. Ho drew No. 1 position at tho barrier, jumped to the front, and then just went on and won with McCarten aittilig still on him. Thero is.no doubt he is a high-class colt, and his meeting with Fidelity is already being discussed. Both are juveniles above tho ordinary. Astute racing men in Melbourno, who havo seen both Gold Pod and Fidelity in action, now regard the colt as tho better. Ilium was lucky to win his division of tho Federal Stakes. Tho Gift, from tho same stable as Arachne, had tho race won when she went off tho course at. the turn. This left Ilium with a clear run to tho post, and ho won easily. Dazzling Speed Cuddle's dazzling speed over the nino furlongs of tho St. Georgo Stakes at Caulfield fairly astounded Melbourne racegoers. Thoy had read of her dashing gallops at Pandwick, but wore not prepared to soo her bent Marabou, Young Idea, Palfrcsco and Allunga like so many common hacks. Voitro jumped her away smartly and, bounding along in front, Cuddle was tho winner all tho way. St. Fervent mado an effort in tho straight, with Yonng Idea a poor third. Palfreseo finished woll in fourth place, but Marabou was very distressed. It was just a case of Cuddle first and the rest nowhere. Naturally she is now a firm favourite for the Australian Cup. After many disappointments, Loud Applause at last won a good race. Luck on this occasion was on his side, for the Queonslander Dulccdo twisted a plato almost off, and was stopped twice, once in tho straight, and then just failed. Mr. Moss has kept on trying with Loud Applause when less determined men would have given up. Loud Applause held a forward position all the way and this helped him toward success. Bunsby Gaze, regarded simply as a stayer, sprang another surprise at Caulfield by dead-heating over eight and a half furlongs, a distance considered rather short for him. Carrying 9.9, he finished brilliantly to divide first place with Link Divine, who is also New Zea-land-bred. Both horses are by Captain Bunsby and havo been good performers in Melbourno. Jockey Issues Writ Tho Oakleigh Plato was a bookmakers' result. Belle Silhouette, a five-year-old mare, who has been battling round the Melbourne suburban courses,' just defeated tho favourite Arachne by half a head. Arachne made a bold bid under 9.7, but the light-weight emerged in the final half furlong and beat tho top-weight, N. Percival riding one of his whirlwind finishes on the outsider. Belle Silhouette equalled the fivo and a-half furlongs record. Closing Time was not in the picture at any part of the race, while the second favourite, Studio, stood fiat-footed nt the barrier and gave the field a long start. She almost took the leau at the end of three furlongs, but naturally could not finish. Apart from Loud Applause, thero was nothing to interest New Zealanders at Sydney's week-end meeting at Canterbury Park. While there are important meetings in Melbourno, Sydney racing always slumps. This week the well-known jockey M. McCarten issued a writ against one of the small turf sheets, Hopkins Newsletter. He is claiming £SOOO for alleged libel. Tho case is creating a good deal of interest. A move is being made by the Sydney proprietary clubs to restrain the broadcasting stations from putting racing information over tho air during tho progress of meetings. Theso stations havo tho broadcasters outside the courses and send out all details. The clubs claim that the activities of the wireless stations have affected attendances and will ask tho Supreme Court for an injunction. This is regarded as a, test case, and the clubs are prepared to go right on to the Privy Council if necessary. They aro being guided by a recent decision in England, where a sporting body won its case against the wireless authorities. Action is ulso oxpected from the State Government against tipping sheets and a tightening up of the supervision of illicit starting-price betting.
