GOOD TE RAPA CONTESTS

. WAIKATO MEETING enge takes handicap SPRINT RACE TO ADALENE SURPRISE BY MODERN MAID DEAD-HEAT IN HACK CUP Good contests were a feature of the opening of tho Waikato Racing Club's Summer .Meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday, in spite of the showery weather and the soft track, which was responsible for several withdrawals. The Storey Memorial Handicap, tho chief event, was A<'on by the consistent Enge, who was in command over the last five furlongs to win decisively from Nun Nicer and Prince Colossus, two ""horses who appear to bo close to winning form. The speedy Adalene was ''responsible foi* a mild surprise in accounting for the President's Handicap, the open sprint. Although most of the winners were well supported there were several good dividends. The best price of tho day ■was returned bv Modern Maid, winner of the Frankton Hurdles, who paid double figures on the win machine. The twc-year-old Merial also paid a good price and Enge made a fine return for a second favourite. Tho attendance was large and the totalisator handled £28,826 10s, compared with £'22,397 10s on the first clay last year, an increase of £6-129. NOTES ON THE RACING SWEET ROSE WINS WELL SOUND EFFORT BY GRATEFUL KILBERIS SCORES NARROWLY BY ARCHER It was with a good finishing effort that tho each-way favourite Sweet Hose won the Trial Stakes. She was fairly wide out behind Jan Ridd, Mataru, Ekanui, Madelon, Lo Chasseur and Solas entering the straight, but came home very strongly and won going away by three lengths from Mataru, who battled on gamely after being one of the pacemakers throughout. Full of Scotch ran 011 solidly to be two lengths away third, just defeating Le Chasseur, who was followed by Madelon, Orefield, Solas, Tho Vamp, Ekanui and Anagram. Sweet Rose is a fine typo of mare and is 011 the improve. Like her half-sister, Eager Rose, sho may bo capablo of running middle distances when her powers are fully developed. Mataru displayed promiso and Full of Scotch was closer at tho finish than at any other stage. Lo Chasseur and Madelon shaped encouragingly and are likely improvers. Tudor Unplaced After appearing almost certain to bo in the money at the last fence, tho each-way fa vourite Tudor missed a place in the Frankton Handicap Hurdles. Curlew made the early running from Modern Maid and No Fooling. Turning along the back Valorous moved up and at the fence near the six furlongs ho jumped to tho front to lead across tho top from Modern Maid, Golden England and No Fooling, with Tudor moving up. Before reaching the turn Modern Maid was in command and she led at tho last fence from Golden England and Tudor. Modern Maid stayed on solidly at tho finish to win by three-parts of a length from Soloist, who came with a rattla at tho finish. Golden England was a head away third and Curlew was fourth. Next to finish were No Fooling, Tudor and Racewhip. Modern Maid's victory was well received, as she gave Mr. R. Hannon his first win since he resumed racing this season after being out of tho game for several years. Having only her second start, Merial finished well to win tho Juvenile Handicap from Ned Cuttle, who finished wide out. After Rulette and Palustre had shown out from the start, Surella soon ran to the front to lead into tho straight from Palustre, Chaytor, Philemup and Ned Cuttle, who wero 011 the outside, with Rulette and Merial handy on tho rails. Inside th« distance Ned Cuttle had the measure of Surella. but Merial came fast on the inside to beat him bv three-parts of a length. Golden Sheila also ran on to get third a neck away and Surella,' who tired quickly in the last little bit, was fourth Then followed Rulette, Surview and Gay Chief. Merial. won well, but Ned Cuttle did not have the best of the running. Enge Beats Nun Nicer A sharp shower fell just before the start of the Storey. Memorial Hanclicap and made the going more soft. Victory went to the consistent Enge, who was not quite as. well fancied as Prince Colossus on. the .win machine,, and was favourite.fornoplace.- Velocipede was half turned at' thf-start and lost a good deal of ground.. Nun Nicd'r, Sinking Fund,' Scotch Nation and Enge were quickly prominent and when they turned along the back Sinking .Fund and Enge were together in the lead ahead of Nun Nicer, Prince Colossus, Gav Rose, Scotch Nation and Day Wind. Five furlongs from home Enge drew clear and led into the straight several lengths ahead of Prince Colossus, Nun Nicer and Gay Rose, with the others strung out. Nothing had a chance with Enge at the finish anc he won bv three-parts of a length from Nun Nicer, with Prince Colossus a similar distance away thirds Gay Rose was fourth, followed by Tahurangi, Scotland, Velocipede and Day Wind. The winner revelled in the going and performed right up to his best form. Nun Nicer and Prince Colossus ran tins races and inav win soon. A resolute finishing effort enabled the each-way favourite Grateful to get up on the rails in tho last little bit to defeat Mangukaha, who appeared almost certain to win when clear at the distance. Whirling, Bonnie Song and Teak were smartest away, leak soon running to the front to lead into the straight from Mangukaha, Lornacre (outside), Gay Defence, Whirling and Grateful. Soon after they straightened up Mangukaha assumed command, only to be defeated by a neck in the last few strides by Grateful, who finished attractively on the rails. Gay Defence battled on gamely to get third two lengths away and Teak was fourth. Next to finish were Lornacre, Whirling, Diacquedoon and Triune. An Exciting Finish The Waikato Hack Cup provided a very exciting finish, the favourites, Light Comedy and Mafeking, deadheating for first. Mafeking, Snow Lap, Dombey and Mungacre were quickly prominent, Mungacre assuming command along the back and making the running to the straight, with Pukeko, Mafeking, Dombey, King Brierly, Light Comedy "and Leo Colossus in close attendance. Once in lino for the post Pukeko and Light Comedy challenged on the outside and Mafeking on the rails. Near tho post Mafeking appeared to hold a slight advantage, but tlm judge was unable to separate him and Light Comedy at the post and doclared a dead-beat, although at first he hoisted Light Comedy's number on top. Pukeko, who ran up quickly after being a long way back at the end of a furlong, was a fine third, and Mungacre was fourth, followed by Leo Colossus, Pound Sterling, Racette and Valrent. Defeat of Puss Moth The Puss Moth-Gipsy Moth bracket was supported down to a short price for the President's Handicap, Adalene scoring at a good price. Prince Ven and Galilee were smartest to begin and they were soon closely attended by Adalene, Bellkyrian and Gipsy Moth. Prince Ven showed tho way into the straight to Adalene, King Ford, Gipsy Moth. Bellkyrian and Princess Star, with Puss Moth next. Near the distance Adnlene came through, and she drew away to win by two lengths from Princess Star, who ran 011 fairly well to defeat Gipsy Moth by a length and a-half. Puss Moth made up ground in the straight to be a close fourth, followed by Prince Ven, King Ford and Star Artist. Adalene ran up to her best form. Puss Moth was unlucky. Wotan Fails The three-year-old Wotan was made a pronounced favourite for the Beerescourt Hack Handicap, but was beaten into fourth position. Queen Nona jumped out cleanly to lead early from Kilberis, La Femme Noire and Con Fuoco, with Wotan and Arawa Rose in tho rear. Crossing the top Kilberis assumed the lead and was first into the straight from Con'Fuoco and Wotan, who had run up very fast, Queen Nona and La Femme Noire. In a good race home Kilberis won by a neck from Con Fuoco, with Arawa Rose three-parts of a length away third. Wotan was next, followed by Red Sand, Enlightenment and La Femme Noire. The first and second horses finished very wide out. The fast run he made in the middle stagos told againit Wotan at the finish.
