LETTER WRONGLY OPENED
MAORI WOMAN'S OFFENCE [fbom our own correspondent] DARGAVILLE. Saturday In the Dargaville Police Court a married Maori woman, Eva Johnston, aged 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully opening a postal packet. Sergeant Culloty said accused received three letters from the postmistress at Aratapu, two for her husband, W. Johnston, and the other for a man named A. L. Johnstone, which contained a cheque for £1 8s Bd. Accused forged tho name of Mr. Johnstone on the cheque and spent the money. She had since made restitution. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
