GUERNSEY BREEDER

VALUABLE STUD CATTLE MODEL FARM NEAR BOSTON The breeding of pedigree Guernsey cattle on his model farm near Boston is the interesting occupation now carried on by Mr. Albert Beck, who retired six years ago from the vice-presi-dency of Harris, Forbes and Company, one of the largest firms of brokers in the United States. Mr. Beck, who is accompanied by Mrs. Beck, is making his first visit to New Zealand, and arrived by the Mariposa yesterday. "I've been in practically all the places in the world where people go except here," he said. " My principal idea is to see the country, but if there are any cattle about, I'm going to see them." The property where Mr. Beck breeds his cattle is called liroadmeadows Farm, and is situated at Wayland, about 18 miles from Boston. New England pas T tures have the reputation of being stony, but Mr. Beck said yesterday that there was hardly t a stone on Ins 300 acres. He keeps between 80 and_loo pure-bred cattle, and his cows yield 50 to 651b. of milk a day, the butter-fat average being 5 per cent. Mr. Beck's farm is a model one in all respects, for he has most up-to-date barns, and his dairy has received the highest rating in the country for hygiene and efficiency. But be is principally interested in the breeding of cattle,, and as a member of the American Guernsey Cattle Club he is devoting his efforts toward the improvement of the stock.
