DAIRY PROPOSALS

GUARANTEED PRICES SUITABLE FORMULA SOUGHT PERSONNEL OF COMMITTEE The Government's plans for guaranteeing priccs # to dairy farmers are in abeyance while a special committee investigates methods of applying the guarantee and of adjusting payments. Tho Government has no definite plan ready, according to tho general belief in the trade. It will be the aim of the committee to present a plan for the consideration of the Cabinet. The chairman of the committee is Mr. G. A. Duncan, a member of tho Executive Commission of Agriculture. The members are: —Dr. W. B. Sutch, of the staff of the Minister of Finance; Mr. G. Pottinger, accountant to tho Dairy Board; Mr. A. H. Cockayne and Mr. E. J. Fawcett, of the Department of Agriculture; Mr. D. O. Williams, lecturer at Massey College; and Mr. W. Westwater, internal auditor of tho New Zealand Co-opcrativo Dairy Company, Limited. It is believed the committee is in constant touch with the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash. The committee began its investigations about two weeks ago and it is expected to be some weeks before it is ready with a report. It is suggested that the committee is considering also proposed changes in marketing dairy produce. Tho scheme adopted by the dairy industry last year will require some modification in order to reconcile it with the guaranteed prices plan. It is gathered that little progress, beyond a general desiro to co-operate, was made at recent meetings between the Cabinet and tho Dairy Board.
