THE WAIKATO RIVER COLONEL PRAISE [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday After trout-fishing in the Waikato which surprised and delighted them, Colonel J. N. Horlick and his nephew, Sir Peter Horlick, who at at present in Wellington, left to-day for Taupo to fish in the Tongariro. "I am amazed at the variety of fishing provided by the trout streams of the North Island," said Colonel Horlick today, "and there are incredible trout. Everywhere wc went everybody was polite and wonderfully helpful. "After the English trout, they seemed like porpoises. Most of those we caught woidd have been stuffed had they been caught in England. 1 once caught a six-pounder in England, but such fish are very rare. 1 found it very interesting and amazing fishing, provided one used a light tackle. In some places, without a boat, it is necessary to have a long rod to reach the right water, but from a boat we had none of these troubles, quite a short cast serving." Colonel Horlick, who has fished in most countries of the world, described it as "wonderful fishing." The average of their bags on the Waikato was 41b and the best day brought 11 fish averaging 4lb. 7oz. They were nearly all rainbow, which provided excellent sport, but about every tenth fish was a brown trout, and these were beautiful fish, strong and deep in build and good fighters.
