RECLAMATION WORK

LARGE AREA AT NAPIER COMPLETION OF DRAINAGE One of the most important works in progress in the Hawke's Bay district at the present time is the development of the Ahuriri Lagoon, an area of 7500 acres, which was virtually received by the Napier Harbour Board as a legacy from the earthquake of 1931, when the sea bed was raised. The land was taken over by the Small Farms Board in 1934 with a view to ultimate subdivision and close settlement. Delivering his annual report this week, Mr. Trevor M. Geddis, chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, stated that the whole of the 7500 acres will be dry land within a few months of the arrival of the necessary pumps from England to complete the drainage scheme. A contract for the pumps was let recently, and they are due to arrive in New Zealand on April 1 next. In the meantime, much valuable work has been carried out in the direction of draining the southern section of the block, and experimental planting and cultivation of an area of 25 acres has already been put in hand.
