FISHING IMPROVES

ROTORUA AND TAUPO TROUT IN BETTER CONDITION [bt telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday Fishing conditions in the Rotorua district have improved recently. Mr. A. Keen, conservator of fisheries, in his fortnightly report, states the mouths of the Hatnurana and Ngongotaha streams fished very well, while anglers also obtained good sport night-fishing at Awahou. The heaviest fish taken during the period weighed 9Jlb. This was a rainbow taken by the Hon. C. J. Lyttelton, at Hamurana. Lake Okareka, which contains good-conditioned fish, was from an angler's point of view difficult during tho period owing to its high level. In tho Waimana-Opotiki area, rivers were in flood and practically unfishable during the fortnight. Conditions were much improved by February 15, and plenty of fish were seen in the top end of the Waimana River, where an angler during tho day landed seven. The results obtained in the Taupo area were tho best so far this season. The fish were reported to be in excellent condition, and a number weighing 71b. to 81b. were taken. Anglers enjoyed good sport fishing from the shores at Jerusalem, Acacia and Waikereru Bays. The fish taken at these places were all in excellent condition. Fish up to Sib. were taken from Three and Four Mile Bays, which also fished well. When the weather was favourable the Waitahanui outlet produced quite good results. Anglers using the dry fly above the Huka Falls took good bags of fish, some of which weighed not less than Sib. The Tongariro River suffered so much from the floods that fishing there was practically impossible. Toward the end of the period, however, conditions improved, and this river, providing no further heavy rain is experienced, should now fish quite well. The condition of the Tongariro also adversely affected the Delta.
