CHOICE OF CAREERS
HEADMASTER'S CRITICISM i NEGLECT OF RURAL PURSUITS [bv telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Thursday The fact that of 114 new boys who entered school at the beginning of this year only 12 are taking a rural course is commented upon in the annual report of Mr. J. Hutton, rector of tho Gisborne High School, who remarks that the proportion is too small for a centre of an agricultural district. The school roll totals 518, of whom 29fi are boys, but only 30 are taking the rural course. Criticism of the choice of careers also applied to the girls, Mr. Hutton pointing out that only nine enrolled for tho home course, although excellent provision was mado l for needlework, cookery, hygiene and handicrafts, while 54 enrolled for tho commercial course and 33 for the professional course. "I have no doubt that tho number who enrolled for the commercial course would be benefited more by the home course," stated Mr. Hutton.
