SHIPS BAR-BOUND

WEST COAST HARBOURS EFFECTS OF RECENT STORM WESTPORT AND GREYMOUTH Owing to tlic recent stormy weather on the West Coast of the South Island the harbour bars at the entrance to West port and Greymouth have shallowed to an alarming degree, making the ports unworkable for shipping. The steamer Canopus has been barbound at Westport sinoe last Friday, waiting to leave for Auckland. Although the vessel is only half loaded, she is unable to sail on account of the shallowness of the bar. It is hoped to despatch her to-morrow if the tides make sufficiently, but there is a possibility that she will have to unload a quantity of her coal cargo before sho can leave. The steamer Poolta has been at Greymouth since February 11 and has been unable to leave for Auckland owing to the state of the bar. On account of the delay, the trip to Auckland has been cancelled.
