HOPELESS STRIKE

AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN UNIONS REFUSE EXTENSION (Received February 17. 9.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Feb. 17 A conference of Federal unions and the Emergency Committee of the Australian Council of Trades Unions, by a large majority defeated a motion for an extension of the seamen's strike. The miners' delegate, Mr. Orr, proposed that all the unions represented should instruct their members not to undertake the moving or repairing of vessels manned by volunteers, but scant support was given to the motion. The onus for the continuance of the strike now is on the seamen, but without hope of success in any direction, and many defections from the union are expected. The conference decided to instruct Federal Labour members to move the adjournment when the House meets and demand a repeal of the licensing legislation.
