STRUCK BY A TRAIN

MOTOR CAMPER INJURED LINE USED AS SHORT CUT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE AKOHA, Monday A fractured skull and severe abrasions were received by Mr. Norman Lockhead, of Te Puna, Tauranga, when he was struck by the engine of an excursion train which passed through Te Aroha shortly before 10 o'clock last night. Mr. Lockhead, together with his sister, had been camping at the Te Aroha motor camp, and the pair were returning to the camp on foot from a visit to the town. They had elected to take a short cut to the camp over the railway bridge. Miss Lockhead stated that they had safely negotiated the bridge and were proceeding along the railway track when they saw the train approaching. Both stood clear but just when the engine was upon them her brother appeared to stumble. He was caught by the cowcatcher and flung violently to one side. The injured man was attended by Dr. Bridgeman and was later removed to the Waikato Hospital. His condition is serious.
