THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE !-UNFAVOURABLE ATMOSPHERE The unfavourable atmosphere created in the investment market by Government control of the milling industry, uitfected operations on t]jo Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Support for several issues was lacking and, with a somewhat quieter demand for Australian' shares, the general tone was unsatisfactory. The preference for short-term Government loans, against the longer-dated issues, was noticeable. A parcel of 1940, 4 per cent bonds changed hands 10s dearer. After allowing for accrued interest,' tlio 194G 4 per cent stock was 7s 6d cheaper in a transfer at £lO2 10s. Overseas banks generally were firm, but there was less freedom in dealing. New Zealands dropped, business passing 6d lower down to 48s 9d, with more available at 48s 6d. Recent improvement in insurances was not Held. South British lost Is in a. sale at 955, and New Zealands were secured 3d cheaper at 63s 6d. Among the industrials, Bycrofts were again available at 51s 9d, and Norihern Roller at 30s, but no offers wera recorded. A sale in Northern Roller at the current price was reported. A fall of Is to 45s in quotations for Wilsons Cement failed to attract buyers. There was a better inquiry for one or two issues, including Farmers' Trading and Dominion Breweries, both of which advanced in trading. New Zealand Breweries lost ground and Kauri Timbers also were cheaper. "Unchanged, to slightly higher prices were paid for coal and gas shares. Shares in the loan and agency group again advanced.
