NEW ZEALAND'S NEED

GREATER POPULATION PREPARATION FOR INCREASE The opinion that New Zealand was capable of carrying five, six or ten times the present population, was expressed by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, at a public meeting held in Timaru to consider the question of providing a pure water supply for a large farming area. The Minister made his (Observations after Mr. T. D. Burnett, M.P. for <Temuka, had remarked that the area which was in need of the proposed water supply had a population of 2500. That number was far too small, said Mr. Burnett, and it gave rise to serious thought. Instead.of only 2500 in the area there should be at least 10,000, and one of the first steps to be taken to increase the population was the provision of a permanent and never-fail-ing supply of pure, running water. Mr. Burnett struck an important note when he said that what the country needs is increased population,' J said the Minister. " That is perfectly true, but before we set out to increase the population we must make provision for the people who come here."
