SIR THEODORE MORISON DISTINGUISHED CAREER (Received Fcbrunry 10, 5.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY. Feb. 15 The death has occurred in Paris of Sir Theodore Morison, director of the British Institute in the French capital since 1933. Formerly Sir Theodore was a member of the Viceroy's Council in India and for 10 years was principal of the Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne. The late Sir Theodore Morison had a distinguished career in India and East Africa. Ho was born in England in May, 1863, and educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Going to India in 1885 as tutor to the young Maharajahs of Chhatpur and Charkhari, he was appointed, four years later a professor at the Mahommedan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh. In 1899 he was made principal of the college and in 1903-4 served as an additional member of the Viceroy's Legislative Council. For domestic reasons Sir Theodore resigned in 1905 and returned to England. A year later he was made a member of the Council of India, a 10 years' appointment. In 1910 he was knighted (K.C.I. 10.). Soon alter the world-war began ho became a lieutenant in the Cambridgeshire Regiment and for two years served in East Africa, first as political staff officer with the forces in the field and afterward as senior political officer in German East Africa. For his services he received the additional knighthood of K.C.S.I, and the C.B.K. After returning to England in 1919 Sir Theodore served for a few months on tho general staff at the War Office with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. On his release from the Army he was appointed principal of Armstrong Collego, Newcastle-on-Tyne. In the 10 years during which he held that office lie initiated various schemes for the exchange of visits, information and courtesies between the Universities of France and England. For two years he was Vice-Chancellor of Durham University. In March, 1933. ho was appointed director of the British Institute in Paris. Among tho books ho wrote ars: "Imperial Rule in India," "The Industrial Organisation of an Indian Province" and "Economic Transition in India."
