NEW TRADE TREATY

SWISS AND AMERICANS MUTUAL CONCESSIONS ECONOMICS AND PEACE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received February IG, 6.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 The State Department to-day announced that the reciprocal trade treaty recently negotiated with Switzerland will become effective immediately. These agreements now total 10. The other nino comprise treaties with Cuba, Belgium, Haiti, Sweden, Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, Honduras and Colombia. The lastnamed is negotiated, but not yet operative. The treaty with Switzerland grants reductions in duties on many American agricultural products and manufactured goods, enlarges quotas and promises that there shall be no increased duty on others. American concessions to Switzerland consist principally of reductions in duties and an undertaking to watch the movements of certain dyes, cheeses and textile specialties. In a broadcast, address this eveninp? tho Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, said the Government was prepared to press its reciprocal tariff treaty programme. He laid stress on the vital bearing of economic affairs on matters of war and peace, saying: "If the world's economic affairs could be made to prosper by wise domestic management in each country and by a beneficial interchange of trade between them, then the fears and mistrusts which beset the nations will diminish. Then the peoples will listen correspondingly less enthusiastically to leaders who call upon them to vindicate themselves in war."
