TROTTING TRAINER'S TRIUMPH

SUCCESSES AT EPSOM F. J. SMITH'S FIVE WINS / ■ TWO OUTSIDERS PREVAIL f 1 1 1 GALA DAY AND BISMUTH SOME GOOD PLACE DIVIDENDS X notable triumph was scored by tho trainer-driver F. J. Smith when he gained five wins in tho seven races in which he was represented at tho opening of tho Auckland Trotting Club's meeting at Alexandra Park, Epsom, on Saturday. His winners were Lynworthy, King's Warrior, Nervie's Last, Rayon d'Or and Pegaway and they were all each-way favourites at fairly short prices, King's Warrior paying ono of the smallest dividends that has been returned on the straight-out totalisator in Auckland and less than money back on the place machine. The course was fast and somo fine finishes were witnessed, particularly those in tho Trial Handicap and the Mount Albert Handicap, which were won by outsiders, Gala Day and Bismuth respectively, both of whom paid over a quarter of a century on the win machine. Autumn Lou returned double figures when she won tho February Handicap and Worthy Song and Lucky Love did'likewise for third placings, Several other horses also made good K place returns. The attendance was estimated at 7000 and the totalisator handled £19,194, compared with £16,497 15s on tho first day last year, an increase of £2696 ss.
