RIOTS IN BRITAIN SOME CONCERN FELT a Considerable alarm was felt half 1 century ago as to the likely outcome of serious riots that occurred in various parts of Britain. The New -Zealand Herald of February 17, 1886, stated:— "The present disposition of the masses in England is ominous in the extreme. The politico-social outbreak in London has been followed by similar ebullitions in the provinces. The outburst of lawlessness in the West End has been succeeded by rioting of a serious character in Leicester and now the epidemic has spread to Birmingham and Yarmouth. The police authorities have proved equal to the occasion and succeeded in suppressing the* outbreaks "
