WOMEN'S MATCH

CONTEST AT EDEN PARK if SMALL SCORE BY AUCKLAND WELLINGTON'S GOOD REPLY The annual match for the Hallybur-ton-Johnstone Shield between teanjs representing the Auckland and Wellington Women's Cricket Associations was commenced at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon in fine weather and in the presence of a fair crowd of spectators. Auckland batted first, but gave a poor showing, being dismissed for the small total of 69. Wellington made an effective reply by knocking up 114 for the loss of three wickets. The Wellington team undoubtedly showed its all-round superiority, more particularly in batting. In this department H. Buck, who made 74 not out, was outstanding. She met all the bowling with the full face of the bat and scored freely on both sides of the wicket. Her forceful strokes when playing back were reminiscent of an English professional. It was a really impressive performance. The visiting players all displayed a knowledge of how to hit the ball, whereas, on the other hand, the Aucklanders appeared to bo overawed by the occasion and were more or less content to let the ball hit the bat. M. Ivoefoed, E. Page and J. Riddolls were the exceptions. The bowling and fielding of both teams was highly creditable, the smartness in picking up and returning to the wicket earning frequent applause. E. Page took a brilliant catch in disposing of D. Hatcher. N. Sheridan was responsible for a fine bowling performance for Wellington, securing ths excellent average of four for 13. The match will be resumed at 11 o'clock this morning.
