CRIPPLE IMPRISONED
SENTENCE FOR BIGAMY NO MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES [by telegraph—press association] CHRISTCHUKCH, Friday A helpless cripple, Joseph Halford, who was carried into the Supreme Court in a chair, was to-day sentenced to two years' imprisonment by Mr. Justice Northcroft, on a charge of bigamy. His Honor said that there were no mitigating circumstances. The files showed that two years after Halford's bigamous marriage in New Zealand he had written affectionate letters to his wife in England. "The crime is a serious one," said His Honor, "and a proper deterrent is necessary. It appears that both you and your 'second wife' have been living on charity. In all the circumstances I consider it my duty to sentence you to a term of imprisonment."
