DISCOURTESY ON TRAMS

Sir,—lt is not nice to have to complain of our public servants, particularly those who are continually brought into contact with the general public, hut I do think that the complaints that have been made against some of thci tram conductors are fully justified. I say some of the conductors, because it would be most unfair to class them .all as being discourteous and uncivil to passengers when information is asked from them. No doubt it is a case of the wrong man in the right place, and I think the tram authorities would act wisely if they weeded these men out and placed more worthy men in their position. I have noticed on several occasions the short and abrupt manner passengers have been answered by conductors when politely asked for information about streets and stopping places. Tram Traveller.

Sir, —It is evident that a few cases of incivility on the part of tram conductors are being held against the manners of the staff in general. None of your correspondents has yet stated thei degree of rudeness, and because many people are touchy and apt to take things entirely the wrong way, I am inclined to think that it is mere abruptness rather than actual discourtesy. A heavy job on a hot day is liable to make anyone a bit on edge, and no conductor can be expected to fulfil five jobs at once. If you wish to get a real sample of bad tqann?|s,..fts4' a New York "street car" conductor what time it is, at the peak period during the summer,, Your only consolation afterwards will be to "let that one pass," as the -Tommy remarked to the shell that missed him!
