SUMMER MUSIC SCHOOL
I LECTURE AND RECITALS The music of the romantic school of composers, and the works of modern English, French and Russian composers, were dealt with in the finaj lecture and recitals given by Dr. Edgar L. Bainton, noted pianist, composer and'conduotor, now director of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music, at the Music Teachers' Summer School at the University College yesterday. There were large attendances at both morning and afternoon sessions. Mr. Bainton gave his lecture and recital dealing with the romantic school in the morning. He played several compositions by Schumann and Chopin, analysing them as he did so. He concluded his recital with the playing of several works by Brahms, whom he described as the greatest composer after Beethoven, and the culmination of the 19th century composers before the moderns. In the afternoon Dr. Bainton gave a recital of compositions by leading English, French and Russian modern composers. The president of the Auckland Music Teachers' Association, Mr. E. Varley Hudson, thanked Dr. Bainton, and expressed the appreciation of the music teachers of the lectures he had given.
