DANGEROUS DRIVING

OVER 70 MILES AN HOUR LICENCE SUSPENDED Evidence that lie touched 74 miles an hour travelling south on the Great South Road between Papatoetoo and Manurewa about 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve was given against Neil Eitzroy Holderness by Frederick Jones, traffic inspector, in the Papakura Court yesterday before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. .Defendant pleaded guilty to driving at a dangerous speed. The case was characterised by the magistrate as one of the worst that had come before him. He cancelled defendant's driving licence for six months and fined him .C.'i and costs, 10s. Defendant's speed from a point north of Puliinui Road to Wiri was given as (50 to (55 miles by the inspector, who said that ho came in behind the car and followed it. At one blind corner there was nearly an accident. "At the Wiri bridge defendant was travelling at an outrageous speed and reached 74 miles an hour. He passed a complete line of traffic," continued Mr. .Jones, who explained that tho volume of traffic was heavy at the time. "1 was sounding my horn and siren, and succeeded in stopping him. He was candid, admitting that his speed had been excessive, and expressing regret." Defendant said his highest speed was 62 miles an hour.
