SUMNER LIFEBOAT OUT
FLARES SHOWN BY VESSEL INCIDENT OFF NEW BRIGHTON [BY TELECRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The Sumner motor lifeboat was sent out late to-night to the assistance of a vessel which was apparently in distress off New Brighton Pier and was burning flares.
Later the vessel was observed from the shore to be under way again and heading in a northerly direction, but as the lifeboat had not returned at a late hour, having had about a dozen miles to cover, details of the occurrence were not available. It was thought that the vessel might be the auxiliary scow Ngahau, which makes occasional trips between Lyttelton and the small port of Kaiapoi, on the Waimakariri River.
