CRICKET SEASON

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP PONSONBY LEADS PARNELL HARD TASK AHEAD OF GRAFTON The final series of games in the first round of tin; Auckland Cricket Association's first grade championship will be concluded to-morrow. Several of the matches are in ail interesting stage and followers of the game should witness some close arid exciting finishes. Ponsonby already has a first innings lead in the match against Parnell on No. 1 wicket at Eden Park. Parnell made 1-11 in its first innings, while Ponsoiibv replied with 153 for nine wickets. There is every prospect of a close finish in this match, as Parnell is quite capable of staging a good recovery.

North Shore appears to be in a strong position against Grafton on No. '2 wicket, and it ih probable tluit the latter will bo fully occupied in avoiding an outright defeat. North Shore made the fine total of 305 in its first innings and Grafton has 10.-it two valuable wickets for 5'J runs. Grafton has some capable and quick-scoring batsmen, however, and it may have a surprise in store for its opponents. The Univc-rsity-Y.M.C.A. encounter on No. 3 wicket is in a very interesting stage. Having dismissed its opponents for 170, Y.M.C.A.. with five wickets down for GO, is in a fighting position. Eden secured a fine start against King's Old Boys, scoring 300 for eight wickets. SUBURBAN MATCHES GREEN LANE AND MANUKAU The final series of games in the first round of the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association's senior competition will tie concluded to-morrow. The principal game between the leading teams, Greenlone and Manukau, will be followed with interest. Manukau made 123 in its first innings, while Greenlane replied with 51 for three wickets. A very close finish is anticipated. Ponsonhy appears to have the better of Brixton. Tho former scored 149 in its first innings, while Brixton has lost six wickets for 40. K.V. compiled the large total of 246 for nin# wickets against Mount Roskill. Lower grade competitions will also be continued. TE ATA DEFEATS NAVY A cricket match was played at Eden Park yesterday between the Te Ata Club and a side representing the Navy, the former winning by 107 runs on the first innings. Following are the details:— Navy.—First innings, 71 (Fuller 21, Luke 19). Bowling: Hockin took four wickets for 7 runs, Cooper three for 2, Almao two for 13, Hints one for 18. Second innings, 51 for seven wickets (Bennett 19, Garwood 15 not out). Bowling: Langton six for 25, Roberts one for G. Te Ata.—First inningß, 178 for nine wickets, declared (I. Cooper 38. N. H. E. Hockin 35, L. M. Smith 18, G. Langton 1G). Bowling: Cooper took five wickets for 67 runs, Tatton two for 23, Thew one for 8, Scott one for 12. The relay race will be the first competition for the Kiwi Baton. Points will also be awarded for the Jean Armour Memorial trophy.
